Shut Up and BE Amazing
Just writing a quick blog entry to officially say goodbye and good riddance to 2016. Looking back, it’s been a pretty awesome year despite the many deaths and how the election turned out (yes, I’m still pissed). Huge shout out to all the bands, fans, friends, and families who have helped us in making some incredible memories this year. We’re all in this together, and I sincerely hope we have elevated you in the same way you have us.
So, with it being close to a new year, many of us will no doubt be tempted to partake in the social tradition of making resolutions. And, just as many of us will be tempted to announce these goals to our friends and family and clog social media with what we wish to accomplish. So let me just say it right now: shut the fuck up about your resolutions and goals. Stop. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Shut your mouth, put down your keyboard, and don’t pollute the world with crap that only 8% of you will actually stick with.
Yes, I am an asshole, but the reason I’m telling you to shut up about your goals is not because I don’t care; actually quite the opposite, I wish for all of you reading this to be able to accomplish what you set out to do with your life. See most people think that telling your goals to others is helpful in achieving what you have set out to do, but that’s actually not true at all. Recent studies have shown that telling people your goals creates what’s called a “social reality” function in your brain, essentially tricking it into thinking it has done some of the work, releasing endorphins which make you feel good, and thereby making your goals much more difficult and far less motivating. I’ve included the link to a really cool TED talk about this, and the speaker certainly explains it better than I. However, there’s a lot of research out there that suggests that getting closer to achieving your goals includes keeping it to yourself.
So keep you fucking mouths shut, be amazing, live your dreams, and have a wonderful 2017!!
